Thiago Braz Earns 5 Podium Finishes at the Start of the European Leg of the 2022 World Athletics Tour
The Brazilian athlete has been selected for the world championship in his category and is now focusing on the competition, which will be held in Serbia from March 18 to 20
Impressing with results that keep improving with every jump and every meet Thiago Braz has competed in during this season of the World Athletics Tour, the athlete remains one of the best on the indoor circuit currently taking place in Europe. Out of the six competitions, the Olympic record holder has won five medals and is now preparing for the championships in Belgrade.
The season began for Thiago Braz on February 9 at the International Pole Vault Invitational in Uppsala, Sweden. Although he cleared 5.70m and did not win a medal, that was just the beginning. In Łódź, Poland, during the Orlen Cup, the Brazilian cleared 5.71m, making it onto the podium in just his second competition on the circuit and already winning a silver medal.
Always alongside other great pole vaulters, such as Piotr Lisek, Ernst John Obiena, and Christopher Nilsen, Thiago continued to take Brazil to great heights in Europe. At the Liévin Meeting in France, he won yet another silver medal, taking second place on the podium after a stellar jump of 5.81m.
The British Grand Prix was no different. 5.81m, a third silver medal, and second place on the podium. His first bronze came in Torun, at the Orlen Copernicus Cup, when he jumped 5.71m, and then he took his first break. In late February, Thiago Braz returned to Padua, Italy, to continue his preparation for the upcoming events alongside coach Vitaly Petrov.
“I trained hard for this circuit, and I’m very confident that I can push my limits even further in the upcoming races,” said the Olympic medalist. “These aren’t easy races—the competition is very tough—but I’m happy to see that I’m always among the best. I’m excited to give it my all for the rest of the season.”
The 2022 World Athletics Indoor Tour returned on March 5, and Thiago Braz once again proved that he is one of the top athletes of the season. At the Perche Elite Tour in France, the Brazilian cleared 5.91m, the second-highest mark of the competition and his best performance of the year so far. With the bronze medal around his neck, the athlete is already focusing on the competitions ahead at the Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.
“There are always high expectations for achieving great results this year, and seeing the fruits of my labor only makes me want to jump even higher. I’m focused and confident about the challenges ahead. I’m also keeping an eye on the next Olympics. It’s a long journey, but I know that all of Brazil will be cheering me on,” says Thiago about his performance.
The 2022 World Athletics Tour Indoor Championships in Serbia begin on the 18th and run through the 20th. The tournament will be one of the biggest of the season, featuring 25 events in Belgrade in addition to the pole vault. There, Thiago Braz will be aiming for another strong performance.
So far, he has won 5 medals: 3 silver and 2 bronze. The season is just getting started, but based on what we’ve seen from Thiago Braz in the pool, it’s safe to say that the Brazilian will continue to excel throughout the year.
