In 2015, Croatian artist Mislav Mironovic was commissioned by Red Bull to recreate one of the most memorable goals of Neymar Jr.’s career. Today marks the third anniversary of the goal the star scored against Villarreal, and the creator of the artwork—made from soda cans—shares a bit about the experience.
On November 8, 2015, Neymar Jr. scored two of the three goals in FC Barcelona’s victory over Villarreal in La Liga. On the goal that sealed the night’s victory, the then No. 11 pulled off a stunning strike, assisted by Luis Suárez, scoring a goal that was named a finalist for the Puskás Award.
Red Bull enlisted artist Mislav Mironovic—who had previously used the brand's cans to create a jersey for Neymar Jr.—to reimagine the goal.
“The creative process was pretty simple since it was one of the first animations I made, and I only had a camera and ambient light. The only problem was that I didn’t have the software to see where the cans were moving or how they looked. So I had to imagine all the movements myself to position the cans, and only after exporting the photos was I able to see the magic,” said the Croatian.
Mislav says he didn't know much about Neymar Jr., but became a fan of the star shortly after working with him. For him, creating the stop-motion animation of the goal inspired him to take on bigger and better projects.
“After I made the animation, I wasn’t sure if Neymar would post it or not. Then, when I saw the notification saying, ‘Neymar Jr. mentioned you,’ I was really happy. When I saw how many people had viewed the animation, it definitely motivated me to create bigger and better projects!”
The artist also talked about his first time creating something for Neymar Jr. for Red Bull. “The first thing I made for Neymar was his jersey shaped like soda cans. It was made as a gift for him to celebrate winning the Champions League. So that was a very special moment for him and for me, too. I was honored to have the chance to create such a cool piece of art for him,” Mislav concluded.
