Neymar Jr. Joins Jair Bolsonaro on a "Liberdade" Live Stream

Neymar Jr. was the first guest to appear on “Live da Liberdade,” hosted by Brazil’s current president and reelection candidate, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, this Saturday, October 22. The athlete kicked off the online event on Bolsonaro’s YouTube channel, which will last 22 hours; his appearance garnered over 1 million views within the first few moments.

For about 30 minutes, Neymar Jr. spoke about various topics, such as social and civic responsibility, the Neymar Jr. Project Institute, the World Cup, and other issues. “I’m very happy to be part of this live stream, to face challenges head-on and not be afraid to fight, just as our president does. I’m here to help, supporting our president and supporting Brazil,” he said.

One of the topics Neymar Jr. and Bolsonaro discussed was the social project the athlete created in Praia Grande, the city where he spent much of his childhood. “I’m so proud to have created this project. It’s the greatest achievement of my career—I lived in that neighborhood, a humble neighborhood of people who don’t have the means to pursue greater things, and I’m certain I’m helping many people there. Seeing the smile on every child’s face—that smile, that warmth.”

The current president and candidate for reelection got a firsthand look at the INJR in September and was very impressed with the Institute. “I was there a few weeks ago; I’d heard about it in the media and got to experience it in person. Many of them are children of people from humble backgrounds. The education the kids receive there is really great; I spoke with some of the boys there,” Bolsonaro commented.

Another topic that came up frequently in the conversation between Neymar Jr. and Bolsonaro was civil responsibility and how important it is to uphold values that are important to society. The forward even mentioned that it is these values that connect him to Bolsonaro.

“What motivated me to speak out, to stand up, and to express my opinion are the values that the president holds—values that align with my own, with my family’s, and with everything we hold dear: family, our people, our children. That’s what made me take a stand; I realized I needed that strength to speak out, and that it would help a lot of people. And I’m calling on everyone right now to take a stand, because you have the freedom to express yourselves.”

Bolsonaro added that during his administration, the Brazilian people once again demonstrated their patriotism in the streets, especially by wearing green and yellow. “My dream is to leave Brazil in much better shape than the one I inherited in 2019. I believe we are doing the right thing.”
