In Brazil, the world's largest amateur soccer tournament kicks off in April
More than 400,000 registered players, 75 participating countries, thousands of goals scored, and incredible stories told. In just four years, Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five—the world’s largest amateur soccer tournament—has already racked up these numbers. And in 2020, the competition—for which registration is now open—reaches its fifth edition and introduces some new features.
This season, two new countries will showcase their skills in the world stage: Greece and Finland. In Brazil, the tryouts to select the national representative will take place in Recife (PE), Brasília (DF), São Paulo (SP), and Manaus (AM). The capital of Amazonas, Manaus, will host the Brazilian finals on a “special, surprise court.” This will be the first time the Northern region has hosted the country’s final stage. With two titles, Brazil is the tournament’s most successful team. In 2016, Anjos da Bola won the trophy in the mixed category. Two years later, the girls from Resenha 013 took the top spot on the podium. And during this time, several stories emerged, such as: a former prospect from the Corinthians youth academy who became a regional champion; a young man who had played with Neymar Jr. in the Santos youth academy; fans of the star who have gotten tattoos of him; and a housekeeper who created a project for socially vulnerable children.
Starting in April, young people aged 16 to 25, divided into mixed and women’s categories, will have the opportunity to showcase all their skills as they compete for spots in the national stage. The tournament rules allow two athletes over the age limit to take the field.
The winners of the qualifying tournaments in Brasília (DF), Recife (PE), São Paulo (SP), and Manaus (AM) will face off in Manaus in June. The grand champions will wear the yellow vest in the global stage of the competition, facing off against more than 40 countries—including England, France, and Spain—at the Neymar Jr. Project Institute, located in Praia Grande (SP).
As the grand prize for the world final, the teams will receive a trophy and the opportunity to play against Neymar Jr. and his “buddies.” In previous editions, the Brazilian star has invited athletes such as Gabriel Jesus, Daniel Alves, and Djibril Cisse, as well as celebrities like singers Wesley Safadão and Mc Guimê. The winners will also win a trip to meet Neymar Jr. again in Europe and get a glimpse into the athlete’s daily routine.
About Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five
Inspired by “street soccer,” the game’s concept is quite simple: there will be five players on each side of the field, and for every goal scored, the opposing team loses a player. The winning team is the one that scores five goals first or the one with the better score after ten minutes of play. The field is smaller, and players are not allowed to step into the marked area near the goal.
In the last edition, more than 100,000 players from over 40 countries competed in hundreds of qualifiers around the world. For more information, visit https://www.redbullneymarjrsfive.com/en/BR
